SGS College launch new Green Skills Training Centre

Published on 08/04/2025

South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS College) proudly celebrated the launch of SGS GREEN, the College’s new Green Skills Training Centre, at an official opening event in Berkeley.

Attended by key stakeholders, employers, and local government representatives, the event marked a significant milestone in equipping individuals and businesses with the skills needed to drive the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Since acquiring the Berkeley Green site in 2016, SGS College has developed it into a thriving hub for education and innovation. It is home to the SGS University Technical College, which specialises in digital and engineering education, and the Sabrina Centre, where Gloucestershire Constabulary recruits receive their training. Previously, the campus also hosted the Active Building Centre, a research organisation dedicated to advancing low-carbon technologies.

Now, thanks to generous funding from the Strategic Economic Development Fund, SGS College is taking its commitment to sustainability even further with the launch of SGS GREEN. This new centre will provide specialised training in green technologies, addressing the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the renewable energy and sustainability sectors.

Speaking at the launch, SGS College CEO Kevin Hamblin stated:

“SGS GREEN is an essential step in helping our region, and the UK, transition to a low-carbon future. We have already begun delivering training in solar PV installation, battery storage, and air source heat pump installation—practical skills that will drive forward the renewable energy sector. And this is just the beginning. We will soon launch retrofit courses, as well as one-day introductory sessions on biodiversity and digital sustainability, ensuring our learners are fully prepared for the challenges ahead.”

Cllr Catherine Braun, Green Party Councillor for Wotton-under-Edge, North Nibley and Stinchcombe also spoke at the event, stating:

“The opening of SGS GREEN represents a major investment in the future of our region. The transition to a low-carbon economy is essential, and having a dedicated training centre like this ensures that businesses and individuals have the skills they need to drive this change. Furthermore, the retrofit sector alone is projected to create 2500 jobs within Gloucestershire, making this training centre crucial for meeting that demand. SGS College has taken a proactive role in supporting our net-zero ambitions, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this centre will have on our community.”

Kevin Hamblin concluded:

“The shift to renewable and low-carbon technologies is not just necessary—it’s inevitable. Through SGS GREEN, we are committed to ensuring that our region has the expertise to lead the way.”
