AoC launch general election hub

The next general election is on the horizon and it’s going to be an important moment for the country and for the further education sector. As with every election, there is a chance we might see a new party in government who will bring with them a set of new ideas and priorities, and should the current government retain power, they might want to refresh their approach.

Whoever wins will be facing big challenges and colleges will be key to addressing these.

Whether it’s with current MPs who are standing again or new candidates, it’s absolutely vital that our sector is engaging with all those looking to get elected to ensure that our collective voice is heard, not just in the run-up to polling day but in the new parliament as well. Visit the general election hub.

Traineeships could return under Labour

Pre-apprenticeship traineeship courses could see a return under a Labour government, despite the Conservative government recently scrapping a similar scheme due to low take-up.

New training courses for young people would be funded by employers through Labour’s growth and skills levy, a replacement to the apprenticeship levy introduced by the Conservatives in 2017, the party has announced.

Labour announced it would replace the apprenticeship levy with a more flexible alternative in September 2022. Under Labour’s levy plans, employers would spend at least 50 per cent of their levy funds on apprenticeships but could spend the rest on other types of training.  Story via FE Week

The impact of CV fraud - What HR needs to know

Some job applicants may not see an issue with embellishing their CV here and there, but many may not realise that lying on your CV is considered fraud and, therefore, is illegal. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) found that recruitment fraud cost businesses around £23.9 billion annually before the pandemic.

But how common is CV deceit, and how does it affect businesses in the UK? Read the HR Director guide to what businesses need to know about CV fraud, its impact, and how to tackle it.

But it’s not enough to just attract a variety of age-diverse talent. To get the best out of their teams, leaders also need to manage them well. Great article on Rest Less.

World Environment Day – The Role of FE in Tackling Sustainability Issues

According to the UN environment programme, we are using the ‘equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our current way of life, and ecosystems cannot keep up with our demands, they state individuals and civil society must play a key role in raising awareness and urging governments and the private sector to make large-scale changes’. It’s not sustainable and we all have a role to play in tackling the problem.

Education can play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future and we are committed to making it more sustainable and accessible for everyone.

Educating learners about the importance of sustainability hopefully will mean that we can help create a more environmentally conscious workforce that is prepared to tackle the challenges of today, as well as the future. Article via FE News
